Plage Champ de Tir stretches along Algeria's Mediterranean coast approximately 25 kilometers west of Algiers, in the Zeralda region. This section of northern Algeria's shoreline benefits from direct exposure to the warm waters of the Mediterranean, characterized by gradual depths and coastal dynamics typical of beaches in the Mitidja plain. The shore forms part of a densely populated succession of residential and leisure beaches, where tourist facilities blend with public access points. The site occupies a transitional position within a tightly clustered series of beaches: Plage DZ lies just 200 meters away, while Zeralda Beach and the tourist complex beach are situated 1 kilometer and 800 meters respectively. Unlike these neighbors, which are often built around hotel infrastructure or private clubs, Champ de Tir maintains more direct public access and a less formal atmosphere. The name itself reflects the area's military history, a zone historically reserved for coastal defense activities. Upon arrival, visitors encounter an open beach subject to natural conditions, without major facilities, where encounters with other users vary by season. The absence of lifeguard supervision and permanent infrastructure—toilets, showers, dedicated parking—gives this site an unconventional profile compared to neighboring beaches. No Blue Flag certification is on record. Wheelchair access has not been developed. Visitors must independently assess local conditions and adapt their visit to tides and seasonal usage patterns.
The name "Champ de Tir" preserves the memory of military installations that long defined this stretch of Algerian coast, particularly during the colonial period and the decades following independence. Zeralda, a major coastal town in Algiers province, gradually transformed into a residential beach destination from the 1980s onward, attracting an urban middle class seeking Mediterranean escape. This beach remains a relic of that transition: neither fully civilian nor entirely devoted to leisure, it embodies the layered uses that characterize contemporary Algerian shores, where traces of military heritage persist beneath successive waves of tourist development.
