Plage de la Guerlie

Located on the Atlantic coast of Charente-Maritime, approximately 12 kilometres south of Saint-Mathieu, Plage de la Guerlie occupies a quiet stretch of the Charente shoreline defined by limestone cliffs and small sandy coves. This coastal section, exposed to Atlantic influences, benefits from the typical geomorphology of the Aquitaine Basin, where beaches and rocky formations alternate. The hinterland remains largely undeveloped, preserving the rural character of inland Charente, while the seaward horizon stays unobstructed. The beach itself comprises a band of fine sand extending several hundred metres. Unlike Plage de la Chassagne, just 500 metres away and typically more crowded, la Guerlie offers a quieter atmosphere without feeling remote. Immediately nearby sits a designated swimming area (Baignade FR-W, 500 m), reflecting the sector's local appeal. The beach profile slopes gradually, with stable sandy seabed—ideal for swimmers seeking a straightforward entry into the water. The site benefits from summer lifeguard supervision, ensuring a degree of safety during peak season. Beach access is free and open to the public. No specialized facilities (showers, toilets, dedicated parking) are recorded in available data. The beach does not hold Blue Flag status. Accessibility for people with reduced mobility has not been developed.

About this spot

The name 'Guerlie' remains scarcely documented in regional historical sources, suggesting an ancient local designation possibly derived from Charente dialect terms for a minor geographical feature. Charente-Maritime has been a passage and coastal fishing territory since Roman antiquity. During the nineteenth century, the development of railways and coastal roads gradually opened these small beaches to regional seaside tourism. Plage de la Guerlie exemplifies this evolution: long frequented by fishermen and local residents, it transformed into a supervised swimming beach while retaining its character as a neighbourhood beach, far removed from the sprawling tourist complexes of the Aquitaine coast.
