La Cure d'Air

La Cure d'Air extends along the shores of Lake Geneva, in French-speaking Switzerland, a few kilometers east of Lausanne. This section of the Lake Geneva shoreline presents the typical characteristics of the lake's northern coast: a gentle bank that gradually slopes towards the deep waters, framed by the Alps visible in the background. The area alternates between small beaches and wooded areas, with a succession of discreet lakeside villages dotting the coast. The beach itself offers direct access to the cold, crystal-clear waters of Lake Geneva, in a less dense setting than its immediate neighbors. 1.7 km to the west is Plage du Boiron, while Plage CH stretches 2.1 km to the east. The atmosphere remains that of a local swimming spot, without ostentatious tourist infrastructure, where regular visitors and local families constitute the main clientele. The site benefits from a southwest exposure that extends the hours of sunshine in the late afternoon. No supervision service is provided on site, and access is not adapted for people with reduced mobility. Swimming here remains the domain of autonomous swimmers, aware of the lake's seasonal variations and weather conditions. Blue Flag status has not been awarded to this site.

About this spot

The name 'Cure d'Air' evokes health practices of the 19th century, when the shores of Lake Geneva attracted wealthy clientele seeking spa treatments and invigorating 'air baths'. This nomenclature, common in French-speaking Switzerland, reflects the history of lake tourism and the hygienic conviction that the pure air of the alpine lakes possessed curative virtues. Although the spa buildings have disappeared, the toponym persists, anchoring the site in the collective memory of the region. Today, it is mainly on Sundays that the beach comes alive, as residents of Lausanne flee the urban bustle for a few hours of quiet swimming.
