Cangilones de Gualaca

Les Cangilones de Gualaca are located in the province of Bocas del Toro, in northwestern Panama, about 35 kilometers from the town of Changuinola and some 150 kilometers from the provincial capital. The site is part of the Gualaca River basin, a watercourse that crosses a region of dense tropical forest before flowing into the Caribbean Sea. The surrounding coastline alternates between coastal mangroves and small black volcanic sand beaches, characteristic of this geological zone of central Panama. The site is distinguished by its spectacular rock formations that frame natural freshwater and brackish pools, rather than by a traditional beach. Access is on foot from the wooded banks, and visitors discover a succession of small crystal-clear water bodies nestled between limestone rock walls and vegetation-covered cliffs. The atmosphere remains intimate and little frequented, far from the standard coastal tourism of the nearby Bocas del Toro islands. The waters, fed by underground springs and forest runoff, maintain a constant coolness and remarkable transparency. Access to the site is free but unsupervised, and no formal tourist infrastructure is established there. Visitors must bring their own equipment and respect the fragile environment of this area. Swimming is possible year-round, although the rainy season (May to November) increases the river's flow and modifies access conditions. The absence of facilities also means that accessibility for people with reduced mobility is not guaranteed.

About this spot

The name "Cangilones" comes from the Spanish term designating small natural caves or cavities formed by river erosion in limestone rock. This region of Panama, historically inhabited by the Ngäbe-Buglé peoples, remains little developed for tourism despite its proximity to Bocas del Toro. During the construction of the road to Changuinola in the 1960s, workers discovered these remarkable geological formations and began to frequent them as a bathing spot. Even today, the site attracts mainly adventurous travelers and local inhabitants, thus preserving its wild and authentic character away from the commercialized circuits of the region.
