Plage de Kerneuc

Kerneuc is located on the southern coast of Finistère, in Brittany, very close to Plage de Mousterlin (0.5 km) and about 5 km northeast of La Forêt-Fouesnant. This stretch of the Concarneau Bay coastline is characterized by low cliffs and rock formations typical of the Armorican Massif, where schists and granites emerge between expanses of fine sand. The area behind the beach backs onto low coastal vegetation, dotted with maritime pines and gorse, while the neighboring coast alternates between sandy coves and rocky points. The beach itself has a less frequented character than its immediate neighbors: Mousterlin, a few hundred meters away, attracts more summer visitors, while the beaches of La Forêt-Fouesnant, nearly 5 km away, benefit from better tourist signage. Kerneuc retains a more secluded atmosphere, with direct access from coastal paths that wind between private properties. At low tide, the shore widens considerably, revealing mudflats and areas of brown algae where shore fishermen venture. The gentle slope of the foreshore facilitates gradual entry into the water, particularly appreciated during the significant tidal ranges characteristic of this region. No structured facilities are present on site: no lifeguard, no dedicated parking, no amenities. The beach does not have the Blue Flag status. Access is via foot from the GR34 coastal paths or adjacent municipal roads, which naturally limits visitor numbers. This lack of infrastructure reflects the rural character of this part of the Finistère coast, where preserving the coastal environment remains a priority.

About this spot

Kerneuc derives its name from the Breton 'Ker' (village) and 'neuc' (new), evoking one of the many coastal hamlets established in the Middle Ages during the clearing of coastal lands. This region of southern Finistère long depended on fishing and subsistence farming before experiencing measured tourist growth in the 20th century. Unlike the neighboring beaches of La Forêt-Fouesnant, which gradually equipped themselves to welcome vacationers, Kerneuc has retained its character as a working shoreline: until the 1960s, village women came here to harvest seaweed at low tide, a practice documented in the municipal archives of Fouesnant. The coastal path along the beach largely follows old customs routes, remnants of coastal surveillance during the July Monarchy.
