Plage Les Grandes Elmes

Plage Les Grandes Elmes extends along the Catalan Costa Brava, in the Girona province, near the French-Spanish border. Located about 160 kilometers northeast of Barcelona, this section of the Mediterranean coast is characterized by a succession of coves and fine sandy beaches framed by moderate limestone cliffs and pine forests descending to the sea. The Mediterranean here has the crystalline hues typical of this northern region, where the influence of the Pyrenees moderates summer temperatures. The beach is distinguished by its less crowded character than its immediate neighbors. Cala de les Freses, 7.1 kilometers away, and Del Pi, 7.2 kilometers away, attract more visitors in high season, while Les Grandes Elmes retains a quieter atmosphere. The shore has summer supervision, ensuring a certain safety for swimmers. Access remains limited for people with reduced mobility, and pets are not allowed on this beach. Despite the absence of the Blue Flag label, the site benefits from regular management and controlled visitor numbers that preserve its ecological balance. The immediate environment remains sparsely developed, reflecting the desire to preserve the natural character of the area. No major facilities clutter the shore, which enhances the beach's integration into the Mediterranean coastal landscape. Visitors primarily find direct access to the sea and proximity to the coastal paths connecting the neighboring coves, particularly appreciated by hikers and snorkeling enthusiasts.

About this spot

The name 'Grandes Elmes' evokes the large elm trees that once supposedly lined this section of the Catalan coast, although the current vegetation is dominated by umbrella pines and holm oaks typical of the Mediterranean scrubland. This coastal area, historically crossed by trade routes connecting Portbou to Llançà, has retained its wild character despite the tourist developments of past decades. Local fishermen know these shallow waters well, where seagrass meadows attract sea bream and amberjacks, while divers discover remains of submerged Roman port structures, testifying to the maritime past of the Costa Brava.
