Platja d'Ocata

Platja d'Ocata extends along the Maresme coast, in northern Catalonia, about thirty kilometers northeast of Barcelona. This stretch of the Mediterranean coast is characterized by an alternation of small sandy coves and rocky outcrops, typical of this part of the Western Mediterranean. The shore, facing southeast, benefits from direct exposure to sea winds and is distinguished by its proximity to the coastal towns of Maresme, a region historically focused on fishing and maritime trade. Backed by a dense urban fabric, the beach is positioned between Platja del Masnou (1.6 km to the west) and Platges de Montgat (3 km to the east), in an area where coastal residential development has intensified since the 1960s. The shore offers direct access to the sea without significant natural barriers, with a relatively narrow beach profile, characteristic of Mediterranean coastlines subject to active sedimentary dynamics. The general atmosphere remains that of a neighborhood beach, frequented by local residents rather than passing tourists. No formalized tourist infrastructure is documented on site. The beach does not have an environmental quality label, and no supervision is provided. Access remains free, although the lack of specific amenities reflects its status as a community beach integrated into the local urban fabric rather than a structured seaside destination.

About this spot

The toponym "Ocata" is said to derive from the Catalan word for small coves or inlets along the coast. This beach is part of the long history of Maresme, a coastal region that underwent a radical transformation in the 20th century, moving from an essentially fishing-based economy to a suburban residential hub. Old fishermen's houses gradually gave way to apartment buildings, irreversibly altering the landscape. Today, Platja d'Ocata remains an anchor point for swimmers and walkers in the area, retaining a certain authenticity despite the surrounding urbanization.
