South Beach

South Beach stretches along the coast of Northern California, in the immediate vicinity of the Point Reyes peninsula, in Marin County. Located about 60 kilometers north of San Francisco, this beach is part of a coastline characterized by steep cliffs, spectacular rock formations, and direct exposure to Pacific winds. The surrounding coast alternates between fine sandy beaches and rocky headlands, creating a wild and preserved coastal landscape, typical of this region of Northern California. The beach is distinguished by its fine sand substrate and its relatively isolated character compared to neighboring beaches. Point Reyes Beach, located just 0.6 kilometers away, offers similar access but with slightly different exposure, while Drakes Beach, 6.3 kilometers away, remains more protected and more frequented. South Beach itself has an open profile, exposed to Pacific swells, attracting visitors seeking a less developed coastal experience. The sand extends widely at low tide, revealing accessible swimming areas, although coastal currents require some caution. No standard tourist facilities are present on site. The beach does not have Blue Flag certification and remains unmonitored, which implies full responsibility of the visitor for their safety. Access for people with reduced mobility is not adapted. Visitors must plan for complete self-sufficiency in terms of supplies and services.

About this spot

South Beach gets its generic name from its geographical position south of Point Reyes, an iconic cape in Northern California named by Spanish explorer Sebastián Vizcaíno in 1603. The region, integrated into Point Reyes National Seashore since 1962, remains one of the most geologically dynamic coastal areas on the North American Pacific coast, where the San Andreas Fault approaches the shoreline. The beaches of this peninsula, formed by the erosion of sandstones and shales, undergo constant transformation due to winter storms and powerful sea currents. Experienced hikers frequent South Beach as a starting point for inland trails on the peninsula, where coastal marine wildlife—sea lions, monk seals, and osprey—can be observed from the adjacent cliffs.
