Selinus Plajı

Selinus Plajı stretches along the Mediterranean coast of Turkey, in the Central Mediterranean region (Turkish Mediterranean), near the Gulf of Gökova. The coastline here is characterized by a succession of small beaches and coves, framed by wooded hills that gradually descend towards the sea. The water, deep blue and transparent, invites swimming all year round, while the rocky and rugged coast gives this stretch of shore a wild charm, far from massive seaside developments. This beach occupies an intermediate position within a cluster of small shores. 1.7 km to the east is TR-MED Beach, while Muz Deniz Plajı extends 2.4 km in the same direction. Unlike these neighbors, Selinus Plajı retains a more secluded character, with less formalized access and less dense attendance. Fine sand alternates with rocky sections, creating natural micro-environments where small fish and crustaceans nestle. The general atmosphere remains that of an authentic Mediterranean coastal swim, without intrusive tourist infrastructure. No structured services are reported on this beach: no lifeguard station, no designated parking, no showers or amenities. It does not display the Blue Flag certification. Access remains free but not suitable for people with reduced mobility. Only 0.8 km away, the Aqua Park offers an alternative for visitors seeking more organized attractions, while Koru Plajı, 3.5 km away, offers another access point to the regional coastline.

About this spot

Selinus derives its name from the ancient Greek city of Selinus (Σελινοῦς), founded in the 7th century BC on the southwest coast of Sicily. The toponym, adopted here in Turkish, evokes this historical lineage: selinon means 'wild celery' in ancient Greek, a plant that proliferated in the region. This beach is part of a coastal area rich in historical vestiges and stratifications, where Greeks, Romans, and Ottomans have left their mark. The crystal-clear waters of this part of the Turkish Mediterranean regularly attract divers and amateur archaeologists, who discover ceramic tesserae and fragments of ancient pottery there. The proximity of the modern water park contrasts sharply with this historical significance, symbolizing the contemporary tension between heritage preservation and tourist development.
