Bahia Feliz

Bahia Feliz stretches along the southeast coast of Gran Canaria, in the Canary Islands, about 50 kilometers south of Las Palmas. This stretch of the eastern coastline, exposed to the northeast trade winds, presents a coastal profile characteristic of arid lands: low cliffs in the background, a desert hinterland with ochre and gray hues, and a deep blue sea contrasting with the mineral landscape. The area, sparsely urbanized, retains the raw appearance of the Canarian coasts before their tourist transformation. The beach itself, located just 200 meters from its neighbor Playa de Bahia Feliz, is part of a succession of small, sparsely frequented coastal shores. El Águila (1.1 km north) and Playa de Tarajalillo (1.2 km north) offer nearby but distinct alternatives. Bahia Feliz remains a quiet cove, without apparent tourist infrastructure, where the surf can be heard and the proximity of the desert is felt in every gust of wind. The absence of crowds and facilities makes it a place for observation rather than conventional relaxation. No services are reported on site: no toilets, no dedicated parking, no showers. The beach does not fly the blue flag and has no supervision. Access for people with reduced mobility is not provided. This situation makes it an exploration site for independent travelers, far from the standards of coastal resorts.

About this spot

The name "Bahia Feliz"—Happy Bay—evokes the optimism of the first Spanish explorers, although local history remains poorly documented. This southeast coast of Gran Canaria, subject to strong winds and coastal currents, long discouraged permanent settlement. Neighboring beaches, including San Agustín (2.7 km south), were gradually developed from the 1960s onwards, while Bahia Feliz remained outside tourist circuits. Its relative isolation has preserved its wild character, occasionally attracting coastal hikers and observers of the islands' volcanic geology.
