Playa Bejuco

Playa Bejuco stretches along the Pacific coast of Costa Rica, in the Guanacaste region, near the Santa Elena Peninsula. This stretch of coastline is characterized by a relatively preserved coastal profile, where the jungle descends to the shoreline, creating a natural transition between the terrestrial ecosystem and the Pacific Ocean. Fine golden sand forms the substrate of this beach, offering a classic swimming area for the region. The area is distinguished by its less developed character compared to neighboring beaches. 3.9 km to the southeast is Playa Corozalito, while Playa San Miguel extends 4.5 km in the same direction. Unlike the latter, Bejuco retains a quieter appearance, without significant tourist infrastructure. The shore opens directly onto the Pacific, exposed to the regular swells that characterize this coast. Upon arrival, visitors discover a strip of sand bordered by tropical vegetation, with direct access to the water without notable obstacles. The beach does not have Blue Flag status and has no official supervision. No sanitary facilities, parking, or dining services are reported. Accessibility for people with reduced mobility is not provided. This lack of infrastructure reflects Bejuco's status as a coastal area remaining in its natural state, intended for independent visitors and those seeking an experience without organized services.

About this spot

The name 'Bejuco' refers to the Spanish term for tropical vines and creepers that proliferate in the humid forests of Guanacaste. This name reflects the immediate geography of the place, where woody vegetation encroaches on the shoreline. The region, historically less densely populated than the tourist areas of northern Guanacaste, has retained a coastal physiognomy close to its pre-Columbian state. The beaches of this peninsula remain nesting sites for sea turtles, particularly leatherbacks, which arrive there during their seasonal migrations—a natural phenomenon that has long shaped the local economy around conservation rather than mass tourism.
