Baignade biologique

Baignade Biologique stretches along the Doubs River in the French Jura, near the village of La Chapelle-Saint-Sauveur, approximately 25 kilometers southwest of Besançon. The waterway winds through wooded limestone cliffs here, carving a narrow gorge where the clear, cool water takes on the characteristic emerald hue typical of Jura rivers. The bank, lined with dense riparian vegetation of willows and poplars, creates a preserved atmosphere far removed from heavy development. The site is distinguished by its pebble beach, characteristic of the Doubs in this upstream section. Unlike Beach Peseux 1, located 18.8 kilometers away and offering more conventional bathing facilities, or Desnes Plage at 19.2 kilometers, this swimming area maintains a more natural character with minimal amenities. The water, cold even in summer, requires some acclimatization and appeals to experienced swimmers rather than families seeking comfort. Water depth varies by section, with calm zones suitable for gradual entry and stronger currents during snowmelt or after heavy rain. The site benefits from summer supervision during authorized bathing periods. No specific facilities—parking, restrooms, or showers—are available. Access is not adapted for people with reduced mobility. The swimming area does not hold Blue Flag certification, reflecting its status as a naturally managed zone.

About this spot

The name "Baignade Biologique" reflects a philosophy of preservation: this swimming zone was designated as such to emphasize its integration into the Doubs river ecosystem, without major artificial development. The Doubs, which historically forms the boundary between Burgundy and Franche-Comté, has long been the economic and cultural heart of the Jura. Its gorges, carved by millennia of erosion, have attracted naturalists and swimmers seeking authenticity since the nineteenth century. From the 1970s onward, local groups campaigned to protect certain stretches of the river from urbanization, giving rise to these swimming zones managed according to environmental stewardship principles.
