Platja de Canet

Platja de Canet stretches along the Maresme coast, in Northern Catalonia, about 40 kilometers northeast of Barcelona. This section of the Mediterranean coast, characterized by a succession of small fine sandy beaches, borders a generally calm sea in summer. The shore is part of a typical coastal landscape for the region: a discreet urban background, some pine forests in the distance, and a regular sandy strip that gradually tapers towards the sea. The beach itself features golden, compact sand, particularly pleasant in the late afternoon when the sun casts long shadows. Less frequented than its immediate neighbors—the Platges d'Arenys de Mar and Platja de la Picòrdia, both 2.7 kilometers away—it offers a quieter atmosphere, without being isolated. Direct southeast exposure makes it a pleasant spot in any season, although winter brings Atlantic swells filtered by the Mediterranean. The beach profile is regular, with no apparent rocks or remarkable indentations. No structured tourist facilities are reported on site. Swimming is done without official supervision. Access remains free and direct from the coastal promenade that borders the Maresme coast, typical of this region where urban and seaside development has been built in relative harmony with the coastline.

About this spot

Canet is a coastal village in Maresme whose name, of Catalan origin, historically designates a small house or shelter. The beach bearing its name reflects the gradual urbanization of this coast starting in the 1960s, when Barcelona expanded northward and seaside tourism transformed Maresme into a regional destination. Unlike large resorts like Malgrat de Mar, Canet has retained a distinct residential character, where vacation homes still coexist with some agricultural holdings in the background. Local residents frequent this beach for its proximity and less commercial atmosphere than the beaches further south.
