Souk El Tenine stretches along the Algerian Mediterranean coast, in the Kabylie region, near the rugged coastline of Greater Kabylie. Located about 1.6 km west of Lota and 2.1 km east of Melbou, this beach is part of a string of small sandy shores that dot this stretch of the Mediterranean. The coastal landscape is characterized by limestone cliffs plunging into shallow waters, while the mountainous hinterland of Kabylie creates a dramatic backdrop. The surrounding coastal villages, scattered along winding roads, retain an atmosphere largely preserved from mass tourism. The shore of Souk El Tenine offers a strip of fine sand that gradually extends towards the sea. Unlike Lota, located immediately to the east and more frequented, this beach remains relatively quiet. The coastal configuration, exposed to north winds, creates an authentic Mediterranean atmosphere, with generally clear water but often animated by moderate swell. The sand, fine and golden, contrasts with the black rocks that emerge in places, evidence of the region''s ancient volcanic activity. The few fishermen's houses and small family restaurants lining the beach reflect the traditional local economy. No structured tourist facilities are reported on site. The beach is neither supervised nor Blue Flag certified. Access remains rudimentary, without facilities for people with reduced mobility. This deliberate absence of modern infrastructure preserves the raw character of the place, attracting visitors seeking a non-commercialized coastal experience. Bathing conditions remain to be assessed according to seasons and local weather conditions.
The name "Souk El Tenine" refers to the traditional Monday markets ("tenine" meaning Monday in colloquial Algerian Arabic) that once animated this stretch of the Kabyle coast. These coastal souks, meeting points for fishermen and traders, structured the economic life of Greater Kabylie for centuries. The region, a cradle of Amazigh culture, retains ancient maritime traditions: the colorful fishing boats moored along the shore perpetuate techniques passed down through generations. Geologists recognize in these cliffs the traces of the Djurdjura massif, a mountain range that has shaped the climate and coastal ecosystems since the Cretaceous period.
