Praia da Gasolineira

Praia da Gasolineira stretches along the Alentejo coast in southern Portugal, about 2 kilometers north of Comporta and about 50 kilometers south of Lisbon. This stretch of the Atlantic coastline is characterized by low cliffs and dunes dotted with coastal vegetation typical of the region. The hinterland, sparsely populated, retains the wild aspect of Alentejo beaches, with direct access from dirt tracks winding through pine and broom trees. The shore consists of a wide strip of fine, golden sand, which extends generously at low tide. Unlike Praia da Comporta, only 2.1 kilometers away and much more frequented, Gasolineira retains a more discreet and less structured character. 5.1 kilometers to the south, Praia dos Brejos offers a similar profile but is more exposed to offshore swells. The water, relatively calm under normal conditions, invites swimming during the summer months, although Atlantic currents require some vigilance. The sand, fine and slightly damp near the water, hardens progressively towards the dunes, facilitating walking. Access to the beach is free and direct from local roads. No supervision or comfort facilities are present: no lifeguard station, no toilets, or showers. The absence of the Blue Flag label reflects its undeveloped beach status. Accessibility for people with reduced mobility is not guaranteed, as the access paths remain rudimentary. This lack of infrastructure makes it a refuge for those seeking unceremonious swimming, far from the standardized amenities.

About this spot

The name "Gasolineira" refers to the former presence of a gas station along the coastal road, a remnant of a time when this region was beginning to open up to automobile tourism. Located in Alentejo, a historically agricultural and sparsely populated region, this beach embodies the gradual evolution of the Portuguese coastline: from fishing villages to the first road infrastructure of the 20th century. Today, it remains little known to conventional tourist routes, frequented mainly by locals and travelers exploring the small roads between Comporta and Pêgo. This relative discretion preserves its authentic character, far from the commercial dynamics that shape the more famous beaches of southern Portugal.
