Les Dunes du Châtelet extends along the coast of Pas-de-Calais, near Tardinghen, in northern France. Located about 4.4 km from Wissant and 1.7 km from the Châtelet beach itself, this section of the coast is part of the Bay of Wissant, an area where the English Channel narrows before the Strait of Dover. The shore here exhibits the typical characteristics of this region: a succession of sandy and pebble beaches, bordered by chalk cliffs marking the inland areas. The site is distinguished by its remarkably preserved dune system, which gives the place a particular physiognomy compared to neighboring beaches that are more urbanized or developed. Unlike Plage GB, located only 0.8 km away and more frequented, Les Dunes du Châtelet retains a wilder and less structured character. The dune landscape offers a gradual transition between the beach and the hinterland, with marram grass and typical coastal plant species of the Northern ecosystem. Direct exposure to the winds of the English Channel gives this area a dynamic atmosphere, where weather conditions and tides daily shape the coastline's morphology. The site has no formal facilities: no toilets, no designated parking, no lifeguard supervision. The absence of the Blue Flag label reflects this natural vocation, without standardized tourist support. Access remains free but without facilities for people with reduced mobility. This configuration makes it a preferred area for visitors seeking a less publicized coastal experience than that of the surrounding seaside resorts.
The name 'Châtelet' refers to an old fortification, the castle of Tardinghen, which once dominated this sector of the Picardy coast. The dunes bearing this name are a key element of the Wissant Bay's geomorphological system, formed over the last millennia by the interaction between river sediment input and the hydrodynamics of the English Channel. This dune area, although modest on a regional scale, represents one of the last undeveloped remnants of this type of coast in Pas-de-Calais. Local naturalists have documented the presence of 'fabreries' here, those small fossiliferous cliffs characteristic of the region's Late Cretaceous period, testifying to the ancient sea that covered these lands 80 million years ago.
