Located on Algeria's northern coast, approximately 15 kilometers east of Tangier, Morocco, Plage Oued Tanger occupies a stretch of Mediterranean shoreline defined by limestone cliffs and intermittent river mouths. At the point where the Oued Tanger meets the sea, the region marks a transition between the rocky coasts of the Strait of Gibraltar and the more expansive beaches of eastern Algeria's littoral. The Mediterranean waters, relatively cool even in summer, lap against a coast exposed to northerly winds and the strait's currents. This beach is part of a series of small coastal coves, with Plage DZ situated 0.7 kilometers to the west and Plage Oued Bibi 3.9 kilometers to the east. Access remains basic: no formal tourist infrastructure is reported, and the site offers neither lifeguard services nor comfort amenities. The wild character of the place, untouched by standardized beach development, makes it a destination for local visitors rather than tourists. The absence of Blue Flag certification and basic facilities (restrooms, showers, parking) reflects the status of this stretch of Algerian coast: an unmanaged swimming area accessible primarily to motorized visitors familiar with the approach tracks. Accessibility for people with reduced mobility is not provided. Dog policies are not documented.
The Oued Tanger, which lends its name to this beach, is a coastal waterway of historical significance in the geography of the Strait of Gibraltar. Its mouth has long marked a natural boundary between Moroccan and Algerian territories. This region, dominated by the Moroccan Rif mountains to the north and the Algerian Tell ranges to the south, experiences irregular river regimes: the wadi flows only during winter rainy periods, giving way to pebble and fine sand beaches for the rest of the year. Local fishermen have frequented these shores for generations, predating the era of organized beach tourism.
