Praia da Corredoura stretches along the Algarve coast, in southern Portugal, just a few hundred meters from Benagil, one of the most frequented seaside destinations in the region. Backed by ochre and red cliffs typical of this coastline, it is part of a succession of coves and beaches that punctuate this stretch of the Atlantic coast. The coastal landscape alternates between spectacular rock formations and pockets of fine sand, creating a fragmented and intimate seaside geography. The beach itself consists of a relatively narrow strip of golden sand, extending between two rocky headlands. Unlike Benagil (0.4 km), which concentrates the bulk of the tourist infrastructure and visitor traffic, Corredoura retains a more discreet, less saturated character. In the immediate vicinity are Praia da Marinha and Praia do Carvalho, both 0.9 km away, two other sandy beaches with similar configurations but their own geomorphological features. Access is via a coastal path or stairs carved into the rock, which naturally limits visitor numbers to those willing to walk for a few minutes. No lifeguard service is provided on site. Basic facilities—toilets, showers, restaurants—are absent directly on the beach; visitors must go to Benagil or nearby towns for food or refreshments. Access for people with reduced mobility is not provided. No Blue Flag designation adorns this beach. Swimming is therefore done autonomously, in a setting where individual responsibility prevails.
The name 'Corredoura' evokes in Portuguese the idea of a race or escape—an etymology that could refer to the strong sea currents that characterize this part of the Algarve, or to the history of Barbary raids that marked this coastline in the 16th and 17th centuries. The Algarve coast owes its spectacular morphology to the differential erosion of schists and sandstones by the Atlantic Ocean, a process that has created these lace-like cliffs and iconic sea caves. Benagil, its immediate neighbor, has become famous for its cathedral cave, attracting thousands of kayakers each year; Corredoura, less publicized, benefits from relative tranquility while remaining integrated into this chain of geological wonders that Portuguese navigators and geologists have been documenting since the 15th century.
