Playa Balsitas

Playa Balsitas extends along the Pacific coast of Costa Rica, in the Puntarenas province, about 15 kilometers southwest of the town of Montezuma. This stretch of coastline is characterized by a succession of small coves and beaches, framed by dense tropical vegetation descending to the sea's edge. The coastline here remains relatively preserved, far from the massive developments of northern seaside resorts, with a rocky shore interspersed with small bays of fine sand. The beach itself occupies an intermediate position in this coastal string: Playa Cabo Blanco, 1.1 kilometers away, is the major landmark of the area, while Playa Colorada is 2.1 kilometers to the south. Upon arrival, visitors discover a narrow strip of sand, often bordered by volcanic rocks smoothed by the waves, giving the place a less conventional atmosphere than large developed beaches. Direct exposure to the Pacific means that swells can be present, particularly in the winter season (May to November), attracting intermediate-level surfers but making swimming less easy at certain times. No formal tourist infrastructure is documented on site: no toilets, dedicated parking, or surveillance post. Access remains rustic, typical of the less developed beaches in this region. The absence of Blue Flag certification reflects this wilder purpose. For travelers seeking a less structured coastal experience, with the possibility of exploring rock formations and small reefs near the shore, this area offers an alternative to the crowded destinations of the Nicoya Peninsula.

About this spot

Balsitas derives its name from the wooden rafts ("balsas") that local fishermen traditionally used to navigate this rugged coastline. The region, formed by Quaternary volcanic activity, retains geological traces of this history: the black basalt rocks emerging near the shore come from eruptions of the Cordillera de Talamanca massif. During the 1980s and 1990s, this area became a refuge for marine biologists studying the sea turtle populations that come to nest on the nearby beaches of Cabo Blanco, gradually attracting a community of travelers seeking authentic ecotourism.
