Playa Caletas extends along the Pacific coast of Costa Rica, in the Puntarenas region, near the Nicoya Peninsula. Located about 15 kilometers south of Montezuma, this beach is part of a fragmented coastline characterized by sandy coves alternating with rock formations and wooded areas descending to the sea. The central Pacific coast here offers warm waters and pronounced tidal conditions that regularly sculpt the shoreline. The sand of Playa Caletas has the typical grey-golden hue of the region's volcanic beaches. Unlike Playa Fantasia, located 1.8 kilometers to the north and known for its livelier atmosphere, Caletas retains a quieter and less frequented character. Playa Blanca, 1.9 kilometers away, attracts more surfers and travelers seeking tourist facilities. The beach is fully exposed to Pacific swells, making it an interesting site during periods of moderate swell, particularly between May and November. No supervision services are provided on site. Access remains basic: no developed parking, no showers, or public toilets. Visitors must bring their own equipment and anticipate tidal conditions before visiting. The absence of the Blue Flag label reflects the undeveloped nature of this stretch of coastline, where tourist infrastructure remains minimal.
The name Caletas evokes in Spanish small bays or sheltered coves—a direct reference to the local geography, where geological formations create natural pockets along the shore. This region of Costa Rica, formed by the volcanic activity of the Tilarán mountain range, retains a landscape still sparsely urbanized despite the growing tourist influx to Montezuma and its surroundings. Playa Caletas remains one of the beaches where travelers seeking relative solitude can still experience the coastline of the Nicoya Peninsula without the commercial density of more famous neighboring spots.
