Merk Bay

Merk Bay extends along the western coast of Burma, in the Rakhine region, about 12 kilometers from Lalaji Beach, one of the most frequented seaside destinations on the Burmese coast. This bay is part of a coastal landscape characterized by wooded hills that descend to the Andaman Sea, forming a succession of undeveloped coves and inlets. The local geography, marked by pronounced tides and seasonal currents, shapes a coastal environment still largely preserved from major tourist developments. The bay itself remains little documented in standard tourist guides, reflecting its peripheral character compared to established seaside hubs. Located in close proximity to several other coastal beaches—MM Beach at 7.6 km, 7.9 km, and 8.5 km respectively—Merk Bay occupies an interstitial position in the string of shores along this stretch of coastline. The lack of precise data on substrate composition or facilities suggests limited access and reduced visitor numbers, characteristic of Burmese coastal areas where tourist infrastructure remains unevenly distributed. No swimming supervision is reported, and accessibility for people with reduced mobility is not guaranteed. The bay does not have Blue Flag certification. Visitors should anticipate a completely independent visit, without formalized rescue or reception services, implying careful preparation and prior knowledge of local conditions.

About this spot

The name Merk Bay appears only rarely in Western tourist archives, reflecting the marginal status of this portion of the Burmese coast. The Rakhine region, historically a crossroads of migrations and trade between South and Southeast Asia, retains coastal landscapes little transformed by mass tourism. The bays in this region, formed by the differential erosion of Tertiary geological formations, offer natural refuges for traditional boats. Although little documented in contemporary travel literature, Merk Bay represents the quintessential Burmese coastline that adventurous travelers of the 19th century would have encountered during their coastal expeditions—a space where geography still takes precedence over development.
