Playa Pleito extends along the northwest coast of Costa Rica, in the province of Guanacaste, near the Santa Elena Peninsula. Located about 35 kilometers from La Fortuna and accessible from the Pan-American Highway via secondary roads in the region, this beach is part of a string of small shores that punctuate the Pacific coast of northern Costa Rica. The area is characterized by a succession of shallow bays, rock formations dotting the coastline, and dense coastal vegetation reaching up to the edge of the sand. Playa Pleito is distinguished by its discreet character within a compact beach area. Only 500 meters from Playa Cocal and 600 meters from Plage CR, it remains a destination away from major tourist routes. The shore offers direct access to the ocean without structured facilities, allowing for a swimming experience in an undeveloped setting. Tidal conditions significantly influence accessibility and available surface area, particularly due to the local topography which creates significant variations between high and low tides. No services are reported on site: no toilets, developed parking, or showers. The beach does not have the Blue Flag label and has no supervision. Accessibility for people with reduced mobility is not guaranteed. Visitors must come equipped with their own resources and accept the natural conditions of the site, making it a destination for autonomous travelers familiar with wild coasts.
The name "Pleito" evokes in Spanish a dispute or disagreement—a likely reference to historical land disputes that marked the colonization of the Guanacaste coast. The Santa Elena region, to which this beach belongs, has long been a point of friction between landowners and fishing communities. Playa Pleito retains this frontier atmosphere, little transformed by mass tourism. A local fisherman recounts that before the 1990s, the area was the exclusive domain of leatherback turtles that came to nest in large numbers; today, nests are rare but traces remain in the collective memory of the neighboring village.
