Kumkapı Plajı stretches along the Black Sea coast in the Bolu region of central Turkey, about 200 km east of Ankara. The coastline here is characterized by a succession of small coves and pebble beaches, framed by wooded cliffs that plunge directly into the water. The Black Sea, at this latitude, displays typical gray-green hues, especially during windy periods that regularly sweep this northern coast. The beach itself remains little developed, reflecting the still wild character of this sector of the Turkish coast. In the immediate vicinity are several small pebble beaches—Plage TR-BLK at 0.5 km—dotting the shore over a distance of less than a kilometer. Unlike the developed seaside resorts of the south, Kumkapı Plajı retains a quiet atmosphere, frequented mainly by residents of the surrounding villages and local fishermen. Access is via small coastal paths, and swimming remains subject to the often-changing weather conditions of the Black Sea. The site has no formal tourist infrastructure: no toilets, no showers, no surveillance services. The absence of the Blue Flag label confirms this lack of international standardization. Visitors should come self-sufficient and aware of natural risks, particularly currents and seasonal variations in water temperature.
Kumkapı, literally "oven gate" in Turkish, derives its name from the old traditional cooking facilities that once dotted this coast. The Bolu region, historically a crossroads between central Anatolia and the Black Sea, has long served as a passage point for Ottoman caravans. The pebble beaches of this sector remain little documented in modern tourist guides, thus retaining an authenticity rarely found in the Mediterranean coastal areas. Local fishermen still land anchovies and mullet here, perpetuating an ancestral maritime economy in the face of progressive coastal urbanization.
