Located on the northern shore of Lake Maggiore in Switzerland, about 4.8 km from Plage CH, Spiaggia dei cani is part of the string of small beaches that dot the Ticino coastline between Ascona and Locarno. The lake, one of the deepest in Europe, offers crystal-clear blue-green waters here, bordered by the foothills of the Alps that plunge directly towards the shore. The surrounding coast alternates between small rocky coves and discreet seaside amenities, far from the dense urbanization of neighboring resorts. This small beach is distinguished by its concrete surface, a peculiarity that makes it functional but austere compared to its more natural neighbors like Spiaggia del Sasso Cavallazzo (6.1 km) or Spiaggia dei Caravalle (7.8 km). Backed by the mountain, it offers generous southwest exposure and enjoys a certain tranquility, especially outside the summer periods. Direct access to the water is easy despite the mineral substrate, and the alpine setting that frames it provides an unadorned relaxing atmosphere. The absence of Blue Flag status, swimming supervision, and specific facilities (toilets, showers, parking) makes it an autonomous swimming spot, appreciated by local residents rather than tourists seeking infrastructure. Accessibility for people with reduced mobility is not guaranteed due to the concrete surface and the natural slope of the terrain.
The name "Spiaggia dei cani"—literally "dog beach" in Italian—refers to one of the few areas in Ticino where pets can access the lake freely, a rare tolerance in a region where supervised beaches generally enforce strict restrictions. Located in the Verbano delta, this beach embodies the pragmatic character of Swiss seaside amenities: functional, unpretentious, designed for local use rather than tourist spectacle. Historically, concrete replaced natural gravel in the 1970s, an intervention typical of the era aimed at stabilizing the shores subject to lake level fluctuations, a phenomenon that shaped the entire major coastline.
