Plage El Achouet

Located on the Algerian Mediterranean coast, about 2.5 km east of Tassoust and 3.7 km west of Bazoul, Plage El Achouet is part of a sparsely developed coastal area in the wilaya of Boumerdès. The shore, backed by agricultural land and small coastal hamlets, benefits from direct exposure to the clear waters of the Mediterranean. The bay offers a gentle morphology, characteristic of this part of the Algerian coast where beaches follow small rocky promontories. Access to this beach remains marked by the absence of standardized tourist facilities. No supervision infrastructure is present, and the site remains sparsely frequented outside the summer season. Visitors find a coastal environment with a rural character, where the proximity of Tassoust and Bazoul—two fishing and coastal farming towns—structures the local economy much more than seaside tourism. The beach does not fly the Blue Flag label and has no accessibility facilities for people with reduced mobility. This stretch of the Algerian Mediterranean coast illustrates a very different type of patronage compared to the urban beaches of the Maghreb: it remains accessible to visitors seeking bathing without commercial infrastructure, in a context where coastal fishing activities continue to take precedence over the tourism industry.

About this spot

The name El Achouet refers to the local Berber and Arabic terminology designating a small bay or cove. This coastal region of Boumerdès, historically linked to Mediterranean trade routes and Phoenician and Roman fishing settlements, has retained a traditional economic profile. Unlike the beaches of Tipaza or Algiers, tens of kilometers away, El Achouet has not undergone major tourist transformation since the 1960s. The inhabitants of Tassoust and Bazoul continue to practice artisanal fishing there, and the few families who swim there in the summer are generally from the surrounding villages, thus perpetuating a coastal use rooted in local life rather than mass tourism.
