Fontanil Beach stretches along the Rhône in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, near Lyon. This section of riverbank lies within a stretch where the river winds through broad meanders, alternating between wooded banks and open areas. Geographically, the site sits downstream from Lyon, where the Rhône's conditions vary seasonally depending on water levels and flow rates. The beach is composed of pebbles, typical of Rhône riverbanks. It remains understated compared to more developed facilities at nearby Plage de l'Atol' (0.7 km) or Morlet (1.1 km). The shoreline faces the river current directly with no significant natural protection. Visitors arrive at a largely undeveloped space where riverside vegetation dominates and water access is straightforward but lacks standard amenities. No formal tourist facilities are available on-site. Swimming occurs without official lifeguard supervision. Accessibility for people with reduced mobility is not guaranteed. The beach does not hold Blue Flag status. Visitor conditions remain unrestricted, with no documented restrictions regarding pets.
Fontanil takes its name from the springs and fountains that historically fed this area of river confluence. The Rhône sector between Lyon and Villefranche-sur-Saône developed around river uses: fishing, transport, and gradually recreational bathing. The pebbles forming the beach result from glacial erosion in the Alps, carried downstream by the Rhône for millennia. Unlike the developed beaches of nearby Lake Léman, these river spaces retain a rawer character, rarely publicized, frequented mainly by local residents who understand seasonal flow variations and optimal swimming periods.
