Laufen

Laufen extends along the Swiss bank of the Rhine River, on the border between the cantons of Aargau and Basel-Landschaft, in northeastern Switzerland. The river flows north here towards Germany, its cold, fast-flowing waters shaping a typical Rhine river landscape, bordered by gallery forests and alluvial meadows. The region, crossed by regional roads connecting small riverside towns, offers a rural atmosphere with little tourism, far from the hustle and bustle of Swiss lake resorts. This fine pebble beach is part of a river section exposed to variations in the Rhine's flow rate. Unlike Plage CH, located just 0.9 km downstream and offering a similar configuration, Laufen features a gentle slope towards the water and a less cluttered bank. The site remains discreet, frequented mainly by locals and local swimmers rather than organized tourist flows. The smooth, gray pebbles form a comfortable surface for walking barefoot, while direct access to the water allows for a gradual entry into the current. No official facilities equip the site: no toilets, no showers, no designated parking. The place does not display the Blue Flag label and remains unsupervised. Accessibility for people with reduced mobility is not guaranteed due to the natural nature of the bank. Swimmers must be aware of the risks associated with river currents and seasonal flow variations.

About this spot

The name Laufen, attested since the Middle Ages in Rhine toponymy, likely derives from the Alemannic verb "loufen" (to run), evoking the turbulent nature of the Rhine at this point. This section of the river has long served as a natural boundary and commercial route between Swiss lands and the Holy Roman Empire. In the 19th century, riparian inhabitants exploited the pebbles for local construction, gradually transforming the bank. Even today, anglers regularly frequent the site, perpetuating a quiet tradition of coexistence with the river that summer swimmers discreetly share.
