Playa Coco

Playa Coco stretches along the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica, in the province of Limón, about 50 kilometers south of Puerto Limón and accessible by the coastal road that runs along the tropical coastline. This section of the shore is characterized by a succession of black and golden sand beaches, bordered by coconut trees and dense vegetation typical of the Central American Atlantic coast. The region is bathed by the warm waters of the Caribbean Sea, where warm currents and the influence of trade winds create relatively stable marine conditions year-round. The beach itself offers a strip of fine sand that gradually extends seaward, with a gentle slope conducive to swimming. Unlike Playa Frijolar, located just 600 meters to the north and often more crowded, Coco retains a quieter and less developed character. Conversely, Playa Manzanillo, 1.8 kilometers to the south, attracts more travelers seeking tourist infrastructure. The surrounding coastline remains largely preserved, with stretches of mangrove and coastal forest descending to the high tide line, creating an authentic and sparsely urbanized atmosphere. The beach has neither supervision nor formalized services such as toilets or showers. Access is not adapted for people with reduced mobility. No blue flag has been awarded to this site. Visitors should bring their swimming equipment and respect the natural conditions of the coast, particularly seasonal currents and tropical weather.

About this spot

Playa Coco gets its name from the coconut trees that have lined the shore for centuries, trees emblematic of the Costa Rican Caribbean coast. This region was long the domain of the indigenous Bribri and Cabécar populations before the arrival of Spanish colonists in the 16th century. In the 19th century, the construction of the railway line connecting San José to Puerto Limón transformed the coast into a banana export zone, leaving visible landscape traces even today. The beaches of Limón, including Coco, remain living places for local fishing communities who perpetuate ancestral maritime traditions, despite the gradual rise of tourism in the region.
