Cava Grado

Cava Grado extends along the Tyrrhenian coast of Campania, in southern Italy, about 40 kilometers south of Naples. This stretch of the Campanian coastline is characterized by limestone cliffs plunging towards a deep blue sea, typical of this region where the volcanic heritage of Vesuvius still shapes the coastal landscapes. The shore here belongs to the string of small beaches and coves that punctuate the coast between Salerno and the Sorrento Peninsula, an area less densely urbanized than the more famous seaside resorts to the north. The beach itself consists of a strip of fine sand, relatively narrow, backed by rocks that limit its extent. Unlike Bagno Gino (5.6 km) and Bagno Franco (5.7 km), which benefit from better commercial infrastructure, Cava Grado retains a more raw and less developed character. Access is via a coastal path that descends gradually, offering views of the sea before reaching the sand. The water, clear and temperate in the summer season, invites swimming without particular complications, although the lack of supervision necessitates caution. The site has neither toilets nor showers, nor dedicated parking nearby. No supervision is provided, and access for people with reduced mobility is impossible due to the terrain configuration. Cava Grado does not benefit from the Blue Flag label. For visitors seeking an experience without standardized facilities, this beach offers an alternative to the more commercialized areas of the Campanian coast.

About this spot

The name "Cava" evokes in Italian a quarry or excavation, a likely reference to ancient limestone quarrying that shaped this section of the coast. The Salerno region, to which this coastal stretch administratively belongs, has a long history of mining and stone working, dating back to Roman times. Cava Grado is part of this historical landscape where humans have long exploited local geological resources before seaside tourism reoriented the coastal economy. Local fishermen still frequent these waters, perpetuating a Mediterranean tradition that tourist developments have not entirely erased.
