La spiaggia libera Bagnella is located on the shores of Lake Maggiore, in Swiss Ticino, near the locality of Bagnella. The lake, one of the largest in Northern Europe, features a coastline characterized by gentle banks that gradually slope towards the deep waters. The region, framed by the Alps to the north and the pre-Alpine hills to the south, offers a mountainous setting typical of the Italian-Swiss region, where small villages scattered on the slopes overlook the calm lake waters. This free, undeveloped beach is distinguished by its direct and free access to the lake, contrasting with the neighboring municipal beaches of Pettenasco (5.5 km) and Campegio (5.9 km), which have more developed services. The site retains a natural and tranquil character, attracting those seeking swimming without formal tourist infrastructure. The absence of supervision and facilities makes it a destination for experienced swimmers, particularly appreciated in the low season when the lake is less crowded. No services are reported on site: no toilets, showers, parking, or restaurants. The beach is not Blue Flag certified and has no supervision. Accessibility for people with reduced mobility is not guaranteed. The policy regarding dogs is not documented. Visitors must plan for complete self-sufficiency for this more rustic swimming experience.
The name Bagnella derives from the Latin "balnea" (baths), recalling the ancient use of the lake as a place for swimming and thermal treatments. Ticino, a border region between Switzerland and Italy, has long been a crossroads of cultures and traditions. Bagnella, although modest, is part of this millennia-old lake history: Lake Maggiore served as a trade route and refuge for local populations for centuries. Free beaches like this one represent a contemporary form of resistance to tourist standardization, preserving public access to the natural shores of the lake, a principle rooted in the Swiss philosophy of access to natural spaces.
