Ripaille stretches along the southern shore of Lake Geneva, in Switzerland, a few kilometers east of Thonon-les-Bains (France). This portion of the Alpine shore borders a freshwater lake with cold, crystalline waters, framed by the French Alps to the south and the Swiss hills to the north. The coastline of this region combines pebble beaches and grassy access areas, with a geomorphological profile typical of Alpine glacial lakes. This naturist sector is distinguished by its discreet character and lack of standardized tourist facilities, contrasting sharply with the Plage de la Châtaigneraie 1.6 km to the east and Plage CH 2.7 km away, both more frequented and equipped. Access is via a forest path that opens onto a sparsely populated shore, where lake vegetation descends to the banks. The waters of Lake Geneva retain their characteristic cool temperature, requiring gradual adaptation to immersion. No collective facilities are reported on site: no toilets, no dedicated parking, no showers. Swimming is unsupervised. Access for people with reduced mobility is not guaranteed due to the rugged terrain and lack of specific facilities. The Blue Flag status is not applicable.
The name Ripaille evokes festivities and banquets, from the medieval Latin 'ripalia' (feast). The historic site of Ripaille Castle, a 15th-century fortress transformed into a monastery, overlooks the neighboring shores and testifies to the strategic importance of this Geneva sector. The naturist beach developed discreetly over the following decades, attracting a local clientele attached to the practice of nudism in the mountains. Unlike the Swiss seaside resorts of Lake Geneva, Ripaille has preserved its wild character, a refuge for swimmers seeking lake authenticity away from mass infrastructure.
