Playa de San Miguel

Located on the Mediterranean coast of Algeria, about 500 kilometers east of Algiers, Playa de San Miguel stretches along the northeastern Algerian coastline, in a region where the Mediterranean meets limestone cliffs and rock formations characteristic of this part of the Maghreb. The shore, dominated by arid hills in the background, belongs to a sparsely populated coastal area, alternating between small coves and fine sandy beaches. The beach itself consists of golden sand and is part of a succession of three other nearby beaches: Plage DZ just 300 meters away and Playa de El Zapillo 700 meters away, forming an almost continuous bathing area. Unlike these two immediate neighbors, it benefits from a slightly more sheltered exposure, with generally calm waters in summer. The site remains undeveloped, preserving a natural and non-touristy character, far from standardized seaside resorts. Access to the beach is free. No major infrastructure is reported: no dedicated parking, no restrooms, no swimming supervision. The site does not have the Blue Flag label. Visitors must come prepared and respect local marine conditions, especially the absence of water supervision.

About this spot

The name "San Miguel" evokes the historical Spanish influence in the Mediterranean basin, although this Algerian beach is now integrated into the North African seaside heritage. The coastal region at this latitude experienced intense trade between Spain and the Maghreb from the 16th to the 19th century. These fine sandy beaches, fed by sediment runoff from small mountain streams, constitute important breeding grounds for certain Mediterranean marine species. Little frequented by international tourism, it remains a preferred bathing spot for local residents, particularly in July and August when the waters reach 26 to 27 °C.
