Plage d'El Aouana stretches along the Algerian Mediterranean coast, in the Tizi Ouzou region, about 100 kilometers east of Algiers. This stretch of the Kabyle-Algiers coastline is characterized by a succession of coves and fine sandy beaches bordered by the foothills of the Djurdjura, which gradually descend towards the sea. The shore, exposed to Mediterranean influences, offers generally calm waters in summer, with sandy bottoms that descend regularly. The beach itself features a strip of golden sand, quite wide, stretching for several hundred meters. The site remains relatively spared from intensive urbanization, unlike its immediate neighbors: Plage DZ, 1.9 kilometers away, concentrates more tourist facilities, while Plage Andreu, 5.3 kilometers away, attracts a more cosmopolitan clientele. The atmosphere here remains that of an authentic Mediterranean coastal beach, where the fine sand invites relaxation and the clear water allows for pleasant swimming during the summer months. No permanent tourist facilities are reported on site. Swimming is done without official supervision. Access for people with reduced mobility is not provided. The Blue Flag status is not awarded to this beach. Visitors should plan for the necessary self-sufficiency for a day of swimming, bringing water and provisions.
El Aouana, whose name literally means "the refuge" in Tamazight, refers to the protected geography of this natural bay. Historically, this Kabyle-Algiers coast has served as a mooring for Mediterranean sailors since antiquity, notably the Phoenicians and Romans who exploited the region's fishing resources. During the 20th century, the beaches of Tizi Ouzou experienced moderate tourist development, remaining less saturated than those of the Mitidja. El Aouana embodies this persistence of the Algerian coastline to maintain its discreet Mediterranean character, far from the major seaside resorts of the Maghreb.
