Škara stretches along the central Dalmatian coast of Croatia, in close proximity to the Istrian peninsula, in a region where white limestone plunges directly into the Adriatic Sea. Positioned at coordinates 44.7749°N / 13.9213°E, this beach is part of a string of coves and small bays that characterize this fragmented coastline, where cliffs alternate with pockets of sand and pebbles. The Croatian shoreline at this point reveals the typical geology of the Eastern Mediterranean: rocky outcrops dot the shallow seabed, while Mediterranean vegetation descends to the shores. Škara stands out for its unspoiled and minimally developed character, sharply contrasting with the neighboring beaches of Plage HR (1.2 km away) and Plovanije (1.5 km away), which attract more summer visitors. The beach itself remains discreet, frequented mainly by local residents and travelers seeking deviations from marked tourist routes. Upon arrival, one perceives the absence of intrusive commercial structures; the turquoise water, shallow in the first meters, invites a tranquil swim, while the rocky bottoms require particular attention when entering the water. No lifeguard service is provided on-site, and accessibility for people with reduced mobility is not arranged. The beach does not have a Blue Flag label. No major infrastructure (toilets, parking, showers, dining) is documented. This minimalist configuration makes it a swimming spot to visit with full awareness, particularly suitable for independent swimmers and coastal explorers accustomed to self-sufficiency.
The name Škara, in the local dialect, evokes the notion of bark or rough surface — a direct reference to the rocky formations that dominate this section of the Dalmatian coastline. This region, long contested between Venice and the Ottoman Empire, retains in its toponyms the stratification of Mediterranean linguistic influences. The beaches of this coast, unlike the tourist resorts of the northern Adriatic, have never experienced massive tourist development, remaining spaces where local fishermen continue to cast their nets at dawn, perpetuating a relationship with the shore predating the era of mass tourism.
