Playa de Cuevas Coloradas

Located on the coast of Asturias, in northern Spain, Playa de Cuevas Coloradas stretches along the Cantabrian coastline just a few kilometers from Cabrales, a mountainous region renowned for its blue cheeses. The shore is part of a succession of coves and inlets that characterize this portion of the Bay of Biscay, where limestone cliffs plunge towards a often rough sea. The area behind the beach consists of spectacular rock formations—the "cuevas coloradas" that give the site its name—whose ochre, rust, and gray hues vary depending on light exposure and weather conditions. This beach is distinguished by its wild and undeveloped character, unlike its neighbor Playa de la Franca, 1.5 km away, which is more frequented and has facilities. Access remains confidential, preserving its raw atmosphere. The sand gradually gives way to pebbles and rock formations that structure the swimming area. At low tide, small natural pools form between the rocks, offering sheltered dipping spots. Playa de la Arenas, 3.8 km away, offers a more conventional profile, while Cobiḥeru, 4.3 km away, remains just as confidential. No services are formally reported on site: no designated parking, no toilets, no swimming surveillance. The absence of Blue Flag status reflects this non-touristic vocation. Access is on foot from coastal paths, which naturally limits crowds. Visitors should plan their visit according to tide times, which are particularly important for safely navigating the rocky passages.

About this spot

The name "Cuevas Coloradas" directly refers to the caves and multicolored geological formations that characterize this segment of the Asturian coastline. These colors—resulting from the oxidation of iron and manganese minerals in local schists and limestones—have fascinated geologists since the 19th century. The Asturias region, historically a refuge for Christian kingdoms during the Reconquista, retains a strong cultural identity, visible in the surrounding coastal villages where artisanal fishing and cattle farming remain central. Hikers taking the paths of the Camino de la Costa discover this beach as a contemplative break away from the marked routes, a moment where the raw geology and lack of crowds recall why the Cantabrian coast attracts travelers seeking authenticity.
