Le Creux-de-Genthod extends along the southern shore of Lake Geneva, in French-speaking Switzerland, a few kilometers east of Geneva. This portion of the Lake Geneva shoreline is characterized by a succession of small coves and alluvial beaches, framed by the Jura hills that gently slope towards the waters. The lake, with an average depth of 154 meters, offers generally calm and clear water here, especially in late summer. Adjacent to the town of Genthod, this bathing area is distinguished by its direct access and lack of ostentatious commercialization. In the immediate vicinity are Plage Gitana (1.3 km) and several other bathing areas spread between 2.4 and 2.5 km, forming a chain of popular spots among local residents. The site remains uncrowded compared to Geneva's urban beaches, attracting a local clientele rather than tourists. The absence of official supervision and the natural configuration of the terrain give this place a quiet and undeveloped character. Access is free and open to the public. No specialized equipment (toilets, showers, parking) is reported on site. Swimming is not supervised. The site does not benefit from the Blue Flag label. Accessibility for people with reduced mobility is not guaranteed.
Genthod, a commune on the southern shore of Lake Geneva since the Middle Ages, owes its name to the Genthod family, local lords. Le Creux-de-Genthod refers to a small topographical depression on the shore, characteristic of the post-glacial geological formations of Lake Geneva. The region long served as a landing point for fishermen and boatmen before becoming, in the 20th century, a place of relaxation for Genevans. The harsh winters of the early last century often saw the lake freeze at this depth, allowing crossings on foot—a practice that has disappeared but is still alive in local collective memory.
