David

Located on the Provençal Mediterranean coast, a stone's throw from Cassis, the David bathing area is part of the characteristic landscape of the calanques in southeastern France. At 43°15'N and 5°22'E, it borders the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean, dominated by the limestone cliffs that structure this part of the coast between Marseille and Toulon. The shore, shaped by millennia of marine erosion, alternates between rock formations and small coves, offering a typically Mediterranean coastal geography where the land plunges abruptly into the sea. The David site is distinguished by its immediate proximity to Grand Roucas Beach, just 200 meters away, with which it shares a certain geographical intimacy. Conversely, it is significantly further from Maldormé Beach (2.7 km), which is more exposed to offshore winds. Upon arrival, visitors discover a confined configuration, where rocks emerge and structure access to the water. The character of the place remains that of a local bathing spot, little developed, where rock takes precedence over sand and where the atmosphere is that of a local cove rather than a standardized tourist beach. This bathing area is not awarded the Blue Flag label. No supervision is provided, and access is not suitable for people with reduced mobility. Comfort facilities (toilets, showers, parking) are not documented on site. The environment remains sparsely equipped, reflecting the natural and preserved character of this area of the calanques.

About this spot

The name "David" remains discreet in the local topography, without any major documented historical significance. This bathing area is part of the universe of the calanques of Provence, geological formations shaped by the collapse of karst valleys during the Quaternary period. The region, inhabited since antiquity by the Phoceans of Marseille, saw its shores gradually become holiday resorts in the 19th century. Today, the calanques attract divers and swimmers seeking crystal-clear waters and intact mineral landscapes, far from the coastal urbanization that has transformed other parts of the French Mediterranean.
