Plage de Guerbes

Guerbes Beach stretches along the Algerian Mediterranean coast, near the region of Béjaïa, in the northeast of the country. Located at approximately 36.92°N and 7.16°E, it borders a coast characterized by limestone cliffs and small sandy coves typical of this part of the Kabyle coastline. The Mediterranean here has crystalline hues, especially in summer, with a mountainous background that gradually slopes down to the sea. This beach is distinguished by its fine, golden sand, offering a pleasant contrast to the pebbles of the adjacent small bays. 0.8 km to the east is Plage DZ, while 1.7 km to the northwest lies Plage Sophia, each with its own character. Guerbes itself remains relatively untouched by massive developments, retaining an authentic coastal atmosphere. Access to the beach is easy and swimming is supervised, making it a regular relaxation spot for the region's inhabitants. The beach has active supervision during the summer season, ensuring the safety of swimmers. Public access is confirmed, and basic infrastructure allows for a visit without major complications. No specific facilities for accessibility for people with reduced mobility are reported. The site does not benefit from the Blue Flag label but remains a functional and safe swimming spot for local and visiting guests.

About this spot

Guerbes derives its name from the Berber term 'guerba,' which once designated small fortified coastal villages in Kabylia. This region, renowned for its millennia-old Amazigh heritage, has long served as a refuge for local populations against successive invasions. The beach itself, though modest in terms of tourist infrastructure, represents a cultural anchor for the fishing communities who continue to exploit these fish-rich waters. Locals recount that during the 1970s, the Guerbes coast was an informal gathering place for young people from Béjaïa, before official supervision was established in the 1990s.
