Batukaras Sunrise Resort stretches along the southern coast of Java, in the Cilacap province of Indonesia. Located about 17 kilometers northwest of Pangandaran, this coastline is part of a succession of beaches along the Java Sea, characterized by warm waters and wide-open horizons. The coastal region here has a gently sloping profile, dominated by low limestone formations and coral reefs close to the shore that structure access to the water. The site is distinguished as a developed seaside resort, contrasting with the rougher beaches of Balekambang (7.5 km east) and Batu Hiu (7.7 km east). Upon arrival, visitors discover a strip of coastal sand framed by modest tourist facilities: restaurants, small bungalows, and reception points scattered along the shore. The atmosphere remains relatively quiet outside periods of high local attendance. The shallow seabed near the shore is suitable for cautious swimmers, although swimming supervision is not provided. Road access from Pangandaran is easy, via the coastal road connecting the surrounding villages. No specific facilities (toilets, showers, structured parking) are explicitly documented. The site does not have Blue Flag certification. Accessibility for people with reduced mobility has not been confirmed by available data.
The name Batukaras comes from Javanese: 'batu' means 'stone' and 'karas' evokes solidity and resistance. This name reflects the local geology, marked by rocky outcrops and limestone reefs that have long served as landmarks for fishermen in the region. Historically, this area of Cilacap experienced intense fishing activity before gradually opening up to seaside tourism starting in the 1990s. Locals recount that the first tourist developments emerged around small family warungs, gradually transforming the coastal village into a resort destination for travelers en route to Pangandaran.
