Aruna Community extends along the eastern coast of Ambergris Caye, Belize's largest island, about 25 kilometers off the mainland. This stretch of Caribbean coastline is characterized by the coral and seagrass typical of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, with shallow turquoise waters gradually extending offshore. The shore, lined with coconut trees and dense coastal vegetation, faces the barrier reef that protects the island from Atlantic swells. The site presents itself as a community annex attached to local residential infrastructure, distinct from the privatized tourist beaches that dominate the area. In the immediate vicinity, Beach BZ (1.7 km) and Mahogany Bay Beach club private beach (2 km) represent two opposing models: one remains accessible, the other strictly for members. The shore here retains a less developed character than its immediate neighbors, with more direct access to shallow waters where swimmers can observe the coastal lagoon. The absence of Blue Flag certification and organized supervision reflects its status as a community beach rather than a tourist one. No standardized facilities (toilets, showers, parking) are documented on site. Accessibility for people with reduced mobility is not guaranteed. Visitors should anticipate minimal infrastructure and adapt their visit accordingly.
Ambergris Caye is named after ambergris, a precious substance secreted by sperm whales and washed ashore, which attracted European merchants in the 16th and 17th centuries. The island long served as a refuge for pirates before becoming a lobster fishing center in the 20th century. Aruna Community represents one of the few attempts to preserve public access on an island progressively privatized by tourist developments. The name "Aruna" evokes the Maya and Creole roots of the region, recalling that Belize remains the only Central American country where English is the official language, a legacy of British colonization that profoundly shaped its identity.
