Saint-Jorioz borders Lake Annecy, in Haute-Savoie, about 35 kilometers south of Geneva and 15 kilometers north of Annecy. The lake stretches north-south between the Chablais Alps to the west and the limestone ranges of Bornes-Aravis to the east, offering a closed mountainous setting typical of subalpine lakes. The eastern shore, where Saint-Jorioz is located, remains less urbanized than the Annecy sector, with scattered villages and forests descending to the water. The lake itself, 14 kilometers long and 65 meters deep, maintains a moderate temperature even in summer, reflecting the glacial influence of its watershed. The beach consists of a strip of fine sand that gradually extends towards the deeper water, a rare characteristic on this lake where pebbles and rocky access points dominate elsewhere. Upon arrival, the contrast is striking: while the neighboring Baignade CH, 200 meters to the north, remains minimalist and undeveloped, and Jet de la Rose, 1.4 kilometers to the south, offers a more festive atmosphere with its tourist facilities, Saint-Jorioz cultivates a balance between accessibility and discretion. The warm sand in summer, the gentle slope, and the absence of marked currents make it an uncomplicated swimming spot, where the clear water allows visibility of the bottom for several meters. A paid parking lot facilitates access, and the beach benefits from summer supervision from July 1st to August 31st, from 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM. No additional facilities (showers, toilets, restaurants) are reported on site. The absence of Blue Flag status reflects less strict standards than those of the Mediterranean or Atlantic coasts. Accessibility for people with reduced mobility is not documented, and the dog policy remains undetermined.
The name Saint-Jorioz perpetuates the memory of Saint George (Jorioz in Savoyard dialect), venerated since the Middle Ages in the Alpine valleys. The village, perched on the gentle slopes overlooking the lake, developed in the 19th century as a holiday stop for the Genevan and Savoyard bourgeoisie. The beach itself, gradually developed during the 20th century, embodies the Swiss model of regulated lake recreation: neither wild nor saturated. Local residents tell that before the arrival of passable roads, access to the lake was by boat from Annecy, and that families from Saint-Jorioz would walk down to swim during heatwaves, turning these tranquil shores into a refuge from the heat of the lowlands.
