Plage de Buchillon

Located on the north shore of Lake Geneva, about 30 km east of Geneva, Plage de Buchillon stretches along a coast characterized by small coves alternating with rocky areas. The lake, the largest in Western Europe, offers generally calm waters here, especially in summer, with a gradual depth that facilitates easy entry into the water. The landscape behind the beach combines meadows and small woods typical of the Vaud region, with the first slopes of the Jura mountains in the background. This fine, rounded pebble beach has an intimate character, less frequented than its immediate neighbors – Plage des Mélières (0.1 km away) and Plage des Pêcheurs (0.2 km away) – while remaining easily accessible. The shore, facing northeast, benefits from good light in the late afternoon. Swimming is possible year-round, although the water rarely exceeds 20°C in summer and cools significantly from September onwards. The absence of strong waves allows for calm swimming, suitable for swimmers seeking a wave-free experience. Access to the site is free. No lifeguard or facility infrastructure (toilets, showers, parking) is reported on site. The beach does not fly the Blue Flag. Accessibility for people with reduced mobility is not guaranteed due to the pebble surface and the lack of specific facilities.

About this spot

Buchillon, a small village in Vaud with medieval roots, owes its name to the lowlands ("buisson" in Old French) that once bordered the lake. The region, long dominated by fishing and lake agriculture, has retained this fishing vocation – the "fishermen" after whom the neighboring beach is named bear witness to this. In the 19th century, the arrival of the railway gradually transformed Lake Geneva into a resort destination for the Genevan and Zurich bourgeoisie, although Buchillon remained away from the mass tourism that shaped Montreux or Évian. The beach itself, formed by the centuries-old accumulation of eroded limestone pebbles from the Jura, remains a discreet haven for local residents and connoisseurs of Lake Geneva.
