Riva del Tenciuu

Riva del Tenciuu extends along the eastern shore of Lake Como, in the Swiss canton of Ticino, near the Italian-Swiss border. The lake, a vast glacial body of water framed by the Alps, offers a shore here where mountains plunge directly into deep waters. The local geography is characterized by steep slopes covered with Mediterranean vegetation and chestnut trees, typical of this transitional region between the Alps and Lombardy. The site is distinguished by its discreet character among the surrounding beaches. One kilometer away is Plage CH, while Faggeto Beach extends 2.8 kilometers and Lido di Moltrasio 4.7 kilometers. Unlike the latter, often frequented by families from the region, Riva del Tenciuu retains a less developed atmosphere, where contact with the lake remains direct and unmediated. The water, deep and cool even in summer, reflects the alpine ridges that dominate the landscape. The sparsely developed coastline invites quiet swimming away from standardized facilities. Access to this shore remains basic: no major tourist infrastructure is reported. Swimming is done without formal supervision, and the absence of Blue Flag certification confirms the natural status of the site. Accessibility for people with reduced mobility is not guaranteed. This simplicity precisely characterizes the appeal of Riva del Tenciuu for those seeking an authentic lake experience, without the facilities of the more commercial neighboring beaches.

About this spot

The name "Tenciuu" likely derives from Lombard or local Ticinese dialect, reflecting the superimposed linguistic layers of this border region. Ticino, annexed to Switzerland in 1815 after centuries under Milanese rule, has retained a strong Italian imprint in its toponymy and culture. Lake Como itself, formed by glacial erosion over two million years ago, remains one of the deepest glacial lake depressions in Europe. The Ticino shores of the lake, less densely populated than the Italian side, have long served as transit and trade areas: the rocky shores once facilitated the loading of goods transported by water between the Alps and the Po Valley.
