Matthews Beach extends along Lake Washington, in the Seattle area, about 15 kilometers northeast of downtown. The site occupies a portion of the eastern shore of the lake, characterized by a succession of residential beaches and wooded areas that slope down to the water. Lake Washington, a vast freshwater body framed by the Cascades to the east and the Olympic Mountains to the west, offers a typical Pacific Northwest lake setting, with cold waters and densely populated shores. The beach itself is distinguished by its direct access from the surrounding residential neighborhood, offering a more local than tourist character. In the immediate vicinity, other lake beaches dot the shore: US-W Beach 4.2 kilometers away and another at 4.5 kilometers offer similar experiences, while sites 6.6 and 7 kilometers away mark the limits of the area. Matthews Beach retains the relaxed atmosphere of Lake Washington's community swimming spots, where local residents come to cool off during the summer months. Access is directly from the adjacent neighborhood streets. No official supervision is provided on site, and standard facilities such as toilets, showers, or parking are not documented. The absence of Blue Flag status reflects the informal status of this neighborhood beach, intended primarily for experienced swimmers aware of local lake conditions.
Matthews Beach is named after a pioneering family who settled in the area in the early 20th century, a time when Seattle was gradually expanding northward. Lake Washington, once isolated, was gradually integrated into the urban fabric with the construction of the Ballard Bridge in 1917, transforming its shores into recreational destinations for residents. Even today, Matthews Beach retains this modest vocation as a family swimming spot, far from standardized tourist facilities, where generations of Seattleites continue the summer tradition of the lake.
